Along with Darrell Mansfield, Kilns is honored to welcome Ed Underwood to speak that night on his new book Reborn to be Wild, and the 70’s Jesus Movement!

On Sunday, June 13th, Kilns College had it’s 2nd annual fundraiser and concert, the Summer Soulspeak! It was a crazy awesome success, with over 150 people in attendance, $7,000 raised, and more students signed up for this year’s fall term!

The Pawnshop Kings were absolutely fantastic as always, and a 12-string Breedlove Guitar ($3500 value) was won by the father of our very own Trisha Lavik!

SUMMER SOULSPEAK – June 13th, 2010.

Kilns College is starting off summer with an event featuring live music from the Pawn Shop Kings, a delicious meal from Baldy’s BBQ, and an awesome night of community with fellow Kilns-goers! Starting at 5pm, and going until about 9pm, this event is something you won’t want to miss! You can RSVP at our Facebook page here!

Citizens of the World: Readings in Human Rights is a collection of historical documents and literary works that shows the evolution of an influential concept and the struggle for recognition of the dignity and worth of all people.

Books Introduction:

“In Citizens of the World: Readings in Human Rights, voices speak against injustice-a jailed dissident, a concentration camp inmate, a girl imprisoned in her home under the rule of religious extremists.  We see families torn apart, a man arrested in the middle of the night because of a poem he wrote, peaceful demonstrators flattened by the tanks of their own government’s military.

The experiences of these people raise urgent questions about human rights. Our sense of what human rights are and how they should be protected is always evolving and always subject to debate.  Rather than attempt to survey the history of human rights, the selections in Citizens of the World suggest a way of thinking about human rights, with each representing a moment in its history.  In addition to foundational documents, this anthology includes memoirs, letters, speeches, fiction, and poetry from different periods and parts of the world.  The range of readings shows how the struggle for human rights is driven by the efforts, and affects the lives, of individuals.  Some selections mark great advances in the cause of human rights; others depict horrific human rights abuse…”

It is a campaign around the stages of Disaster Response that will include a DVD, Web updates, print pieces and more.  The intention is to help people understand what is involved in disaster response, how long it can take and how they can continue to be involved.

Many people are beginning to wonder where all the money for Haiti went, what happens next and what they can do to stay involved.  The Haiti(5) Campaign should be a powerful resource for churches, organizations and individuals to continue to pray for and stay engaged with the people of Haiti.

We’ve been slowly working on a conference for February of 2011 that will be a bigger version of the conferences we’ve done in the past.

It will be called The Justice Conference and will be co-sponsored by Kilns College and World Relief NEXT.

Today we received confirmation from our second main speaker – Adam Hochschild.  Dr. Hochschild is the author ofKing Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa and Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free and Empires’s Slaves.

In addition to Dr. Hochschild, we have received confirmation from authors Mike & Danae Yankoski.  Mike took a break from college to live on the streets with America’s homeless and wrote the book Under the Overpass to share what he learned.  Mike & Danae jointly released Zealous Love: A Practical Guide to Social Justice this past month.

There are several more invites still open – so you’ll have to wait to see what the full list of speakers looks like.  We’re only 1/3rd of the way there!!
